Age of Empires is one of the greatest stratagy games ever. Within the game there are many different areas such as map types, terrain and more. In the following page there will be all of the extra information about Age of Empires, so you can fully understand the game.

Terrain

Terrain provides resources and has tactical or strategic uses in combat. The types of terrain include:·

· Water – Impassable to villagers and military units.

· Shallows – Water that is passable to villagers, military units, and boats

· Forest – Impassable to villagers and military units

· Cliff – Impassable to villagers and military units. Provides a 25 percent chance that the attacking unit will cause triple damage on each hit when the target is on the low side of the cliff.·

· Elevation – Provides a 25 percent chance that the attacking unit will cause triple damage on each hit when the target is at a lower elevation.

Unit Attributes

Villagers, military units, boats, and buildings can have the following attributes. Information about the specific attributes of each unit is listed with the description of each unit and on the Technology Tree Foldout.

Attack – How much damage a unit inflicts.

Armor – Reduces the amount of damage a unit suffers in hand-to-hand combat. For example, +5 armor reduces damage by 5.

Piercing Armor – Reduces the amount of damage a unit suffers from Ballista, Helepolis, and missile weapons.

Range – How far missile weapons fire.

Hit points – How much damage a unit can suffer before it dies. To display a unit's hit points, click the unit. The colored bar that appears above a unit shows its general health (green = healthy, red = wounded). The unit's hit points are shown in the status box in the lower-left corner of the game screen (current hit points/maximum hit points). Priests can heal wounded units.

Fire rate – How many seconds it takes a unit to attack again.

Speed – How fast a unit moves.

The Game Types

The game types range from death match to random map with many different factors whihc make them different, in the next few paragraphs it will explain what each one is.

Campaign: This is a single player type of game. In this aseries of related scenarios layout a story for a certain civilization. If it is your first game you should choose the Egyptian one because this is a practice one which leads makes sure that you understand the game. It makes you learn how to do all the required things. It is basically a tutorial.

Scenario: This is single or multiplayer. this is a predesigned game that is not part of a campaign. Scenarios give you certain objectives such as take control of a certain area. Build something at a certain place. These can be made by a player which can be used to play over the internet.

Random Map: (Death Match): In this game the computer starts you off with: 20000 wood and food. 5000 stone and 10000 gold. Then with this you must fight to the death...plain and simple really.

Random Map: Again this is single or multiplayer which starts you off as a small civilization. From this you must use all of the techniques that you have learnt within the game. The game is based on a random world map. You can change the game settings and the victory condition.

Random Map: (score): Singla and multiplayer, this game type is a random map and is won by which ever player has the highest game score at the end of the game.

Random Map: (time limit): Again single or multiplayer, this is won by whoever has the highest score, after the given time limit is met.

Cooperative Game: Only multiplayer. Two or more humans take control of a single civilization, Each player can take control of each unit.

Map Types

The map types often can change the way your tactic may work, you must know the map type for you. In the next part, we will explain the map types.

Small Islands : In the Small Islands map type, each person gets his or her own island for their chosen civilization. There are also other smaller islands for you to extend your city onto.

Large Islands : Most times (in this map type) you will get your own large island. Although sometimes you will have to share it with another person.

Coastal : Usually a map with many rivers and tributaries coming in from the sea. This is good for fishing.

Inland : This type of map is exactly what it says, inland. There are usually rivers and sometimes even small lakes. This map type is one of the best as it has a good range of terrain to make your city on.

Highland : This is basically the same as inland, but sometimes there will be no lakes or water. Which makes you have to use hunting and foraging. A good map as it has more of the other resources.

The Score System

Points are often awarded for what seem like trivial things; 2 points a technology is a strange one. However, they represent progress, so when you start a game and see that your oppenents are two hundred points ahead of you...you know you're going to die a horrid, bloody death.
