The Crazy Gang Units

Units

There are many different units in Age of Empires. Some units are weak, some are heavy, some are cheap and others are expensive. The right use of the units will be the right way to win. Each unit has its way to be useful. A list of the units is shown below.

Stone Age units

Without the Villager, you will not have many chances to survive in this game. The Villager isn't the best unit for attack or defense, but it is the only unit capable of gathering wood, stone, gold and food. It is also the only unit, which can build buildings. In other words, if you don't have any Villagers, you are unable to (re)build your defensive buildings and to gather whatever is necessary to survive.

The Clubman is the weakest unit of all the units capable of dealing damage. It is not very useful, but can be annoying in the beginning of the game. Usually it's not worth training.

The Fishing Boat is only used for fishing. It can't attack anything and is therefore an easy target.

The Trade Boat is used to trade wood, food or stone for gold. Like the Fishing Boat, this unit can't deal damage and is also an easy target. To trade with others, simply point at any of their Docks and right click on that building. Be sure to choose what you want to trade. Although you get gold from your opponent/ally he or her wont lose any gold. Using Trade Boats, gold will simply appear out of nothing!

Tool Age units

The Axeman is an upgraded version of the Clubman. It has more HP and has a more damage dealing attack. Except from that, this unit is not worth much.

The Bowman is the weakest of the archers and also the cheapest. It is the first long range shooting ground unit together with the Slinger. These are very annoying if they are used wisely in the beginning of the game.

The Scout is the first horse unit. It is much faster than many of the other units in the Stone Age and in the Tool Age. It is primarily used for scouting, as it can see longer than most other units. It is also annoying when used as an attacking unit in the Tool Age.

The Light Transport can transport unit across the water. It can't deal damage and is an easy target, just like the Fishing Boat. It can carry 5 units.

The Scout Ship is the first water unit, which can deal damage. It is primarily used for scouting, but you should not hesitate to shoot at your opponent. It is the weakest of the damage dealing ships.

Bronze Age units

The Priest is a powerful unit. It can't deal damage, but can convert any unit to become on of its own tribe. When upgraded, it can be used to convert buildings and enemy Priests as well. It can't convert Town Centers and Wonders. It has a huge convert range (normally 10), so it can stand behind your own units when converting.

The Short Swordsman is more powerful than the Clubman is, but it is far away from being the most powerful unit. It's a more or less useful unit, but I prefer to use Hoplites instead even though they are more expensive.

The Broad Swordsman is an upgraded version of the Short Swordsman. It is more powerful and can be used in a more sensible manner. A little surprise attack by these can irritate your opponent, but don't expect too much of them.

The Hoplites are powerful units. With more HP, more armor and a more damage dealing weapon, this unit can destroy many units before it is destroyed itself. A disadvantage of the Hoplite is that it is very slow, also when attacking. An archer can easily destroy your Hoplite from the distance.

The Bowman was the first archer unit. The Improved Bowman is the next archer in the row. It has a longer shooting range, deals more damage and has more armors. They can be used for both attack and defense.

The Composite Bowman is the best of the non-horse archers. When the Improved Bowman is upgraded, it will become a Composite Bowman. The Composite Bowman is very good against most units, and when playing with the right tribe, these units kick ass!

The Chariot Archer is the first of the horse archers. It is fast and deals a reasonable amount of damage. It has a bonus against the Priests. The Priests can't convert Horse Archers as easy as any other unit.

The Chariot is the first non-archer horse unit used for combat purposes. It is fast but not that heavy. They can be used when you want to spare on your gold.

The Cavalry is more powerful then the Chariot. They deal a fair amount of damage and they are fast too. Good for most combat usage.

The Stone Thrower is the first long-range heavy damage-dealing unit. It is slow and can't shoot anything close to it, but it is very useful against most Towers. It is easy to destroy, as a Villager can destroy it, because the Stone Thrower can't shoot it when it is too close.

The Fishing Ship is an upgraded Fishing Boat. Its purpose is the same, but it can now carry more fish and have more HP.

The Merchant Ship is an upgraded Trade Boat. It can carry more goods and have more HP. The purpose is the same.

The War Galley is an upgraded Scout Ship. It is the first ship that can be used for something in combat. It deals enough damage to annoy (or destroy) your opponent, but upgraded Towers can hit your War Galleys.

Iron Age units

The Long Swordsman is a small, but also a powerful unit. The Long Swordsman is an upgraded Broad Swordsman, and is therefore more powerful.

The Legion is the heaviest of the swordsmen. Its HP is twice the HP of a Long Swordsman. It can deal more damage and is just as cheap. Very useful, but it is very expensive to upgrade the Long Swordsman to a Legion.

The Phalanx is an upgraded Hoplite. This Academy unit is of course better than the Hoplite. It is very good to destroy buildings with, but against archers it doesn't have a chance.

The Centurion is the heaviest of the Academy units. It deals a lot more damage than the Phalanx and can easily destroy any building or unit if it is close to it. It's destroys everything in its way.

The Horse Archers are fast horseback riding archers, which have a long shooting range and deal a fair amount of damage. Their weakness is their few HP, which make it easy to destroy them.

The Heavy Horse Archers are some of my favorites. They have a lot more HP than the ordinary Horse Archers and can shoot a little longer. A large group of these can stop almost anybody, maybe except a large group of Catapults/Helepolis and Triremes.

The Elephant Archers are slow units. Their strong point is their amount of HP. With 600 HP it takes years to kill an Elephant. They are weak against cavalry units, infantry units and academy units.

The Heavy Cavalry is a very powerful unit. They deal a nice amount of damage, have more HP than most units, are fast and is reasonable armored.

The Cataphracts are the heaviest and most powerful horseback riding units. It is very expensive to upgrade your Heavy Cavalry to Cataphracts, but then you have a very good unit with more HP than the Heavy Cavalry. They deal more damage and are more resistant to most things.

The War Elephants are just as slow as the Elephant Archers are. They deal a fair amount of damage and have a lot of HP (600).

The Catapult is an upgraded Stone Thrower. It deals more damage and has a long fire range, which makes it perfect for destruction of Towers. It's not very fast and is just as easily destroyed as the Stone Thrower.

The Heavy Catapult is the ultimate Catapult. It can shoot longer than any other unit or Tower and can therefore be used to destroy whatever you like. It has twice the HP of a Catapult and it deals damage to a small area around the target.

The Ballista is a kind of a Catapult. It doesn't have many HP and doesn't deal as much damage, but it shoots many times faster than the Catapults.

This is the upgraded version of a Ballista. It deals more damage than the Ballista and has a longer fire range. Not many units can get close enough to a group of Helepolis' to destroy them.

The Heavy Transport is a larger version of the Light Transport. It can carry 10 units and have more HP. It is necessary when you want to move any units from one Island to another.

The Trireme is a powerful naval unit. It fire speed is high and it deals a reasonable amount of damage. It can be used to destroy enemy ships, coastal units and coastal buildings.

The Catapult Trireme is much like the Catapults. It differs in the way that it's a naval unit. It can be used the same way as the Triremes, but is especially useful against Towers, as they (mostly) can't hit your Catapult Trireme.

As the Catapult Trireme is much like the Catapult, the Juggernaught reminds much of the Heavy Catapult. It has an area effect when hitting something and can destroy every non-naval unit in its way.
